Fitter Hula the Rescue Dog

Do you have a fit or fat dog? I've always had lean muscular dogs (Proud Dog Mommy), however, our rescue dog, Hula, gained about 25 lbs. in 3 months taking prednisone prescribed by our vet for Kennel Cough that wouldn't go away. The vet said because of her congestion we were NOT to walk her so she could heal. So she is taking steroids that cause weight gain and little or no exercise.

How did Hula get Kennel Cough? We boarded her at a previously very reputable facility while we went on vacation that we've used many times. The manager told us the shot records were not thorough for other dogs and some of the dogs boarded had kennel cough. Terrible. We will never use that place ever again. They should be more thorough. $1500 in vet bills later ($1000 covered by Kennel insurance but still not happy about the unnecessary vet office visits and medication she had to take for so long.)

She used to be lean, energetic and enthusiastic. After gaining all the weight, going from 65-95 lbs., she became tired, lethargic and mopey. Is that word?

Now that the Vet said she can exercise, to help her lose weight we are all taking her on short but frequent walks daily now. She is eating a special (read overpriced but it works) dog food and eating out of a "slow eating bowl" as I call it. It looks fun and prevents her for gulping her food.

She has lost weight and is playing more, acting silly and more enthusiastic 🙂

RIP my beloved Kona, I miss you so........ Mommy (crying) 🙁

Kona: 12 years old. Past away January 2020. He was diagnosed in October 2018 with heart disease and given 3 months to live. He lived 15 MORE Months 🙂 Then diagnosed with tumor on his spleen. Given 5 days to live. He lived 3 more weeks. He was the best dog ever. Always watched me wherever I went. As I walked around the room, anywhere. Followed me everywhere. Sigh. I miss him so much it hurts to think about it.
